If It Sounds Too Good to be True…
Have you noticed the proliferation of outlandish, unbelievable emails that say you’ve won millions of dollars–that someone is just waiting to hand you money? I see these everyday and always wonder why they keep coming. The senders would give up if they didn’t have some kind of reward for doing it, don’t you think?
Well, ask yourself this question. How gullible are we as a nation? We’ve been sold a bill of goods by a man with no track record, no legal birth certificate, who should never have gotten into office in the first place, and who is now partying in Washington to the tune of millions of dollars a week, lavishing his friends with the best of food, drink and entertainment on the backs of the poor and those who have chosen to work. Do we trust his outlandish claims? We shouldn’t, any more than we would answer a fraudulent email. He obviously believes he was given carte blanche to do whatever his little heart desires. Does he care of the economy falls flat on its face, leaving many penniless, because of his foolish ways?
Apparently not. But what are we to do about it? First, we must examine our hearts and decide we will stop looking for the brass ring, the get-rich-quick scheme that will make us suddenly rich. We must repent of such foolishness and instead seek to make wise decisions and work to take care of ourselves. That is the only effort God will bless. And He will bless it no matter what else is going on, if our hearts are right with Him. But are they?
We have an entire culture who feels entitled to much while putting very little effort into it. They think nothing of robbing and injuring others by bilking them with false claims. They believe that if they have a gift for robbing others, they ought to go for the gold. And they do. Look at the names in the news–names of those who have defrauded others to the tune of millions and billions of dollars. And yet, in the end, their victims asked for it, because they wanted to believe in the deal that was too good to be true.
We all want to make our money grow, and that’s an admirable trait. But we ask for trouble when we dream too big and expect unrealistic returns on our money. It’s a rare thing when we get into something that really pays big in ways that are honest and above board. But do we even care about that anymore?
Apparently not. Back in our grandparents’ day no one would’ve fallen for such schemes, because they were suspicious of outsiders who had no track record. They knew it was too good to be true and they refused to risk the bird in their hand. And that was the end of that. What what’s happened to us since then?
Proverbs 1:10-15 says this: “My son, if sinners entice you do not consent. If they say, ‘Come with us…we shall find all kinds of precious wealth. We shall fill our houses with spoil. Throw your lot in with us. We shall all have one purse.’ My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your feet from their path, for their feet run to evil, and they hasten to shed blood.”
That says it all, doesn’t it? We are in the place we are now because we have foolishly cast our lot with evil men. We need to repent, to seek God with all our hearts, to ask for wisdom and listen and obey what He says.
Are we listening?
Because of His great love,
Nancy
